HAIKOU -- As cost cutting grows more important in China, FAW Haima Automobile Co. has a special challenge. It assembles autos in its island province, Hainan, so suppliers on the mainland must ship parts 30 kilometers across the Qiongzhou Strait. In fact, Haima sources only about half of its parts from Hainan. The solution? "We are building industrial parks to attract more suppliers to come" to Hainan, says a senior executive of Haima who asked not to be identified. --Published:2007/24/10
